Benchmarking Study

In its eighth year, the XYPN Benchmarking Study measured vital information about members' firms and will aggregate that data to show the real-life experience of starting, running, and growing a financial planning firm as a member of XY Planning Network.

The survey has allowed us to answer questions like: How does the fee-for-service business model work? What is it like to start and grow your firm over time? What trends do we see in the growth of an average XYPN members' firm?

The survey focuses on revenue and expenses, client services, sources of client/business, and pricing. We track information year-over-year to show trends and provide fee-only financial planning firm owners with key metrics to measure their business against.

FAQs

I’m a newer member, and I don’t have many clients. Should I complete the survey?
  • Yes! Implementing (0-20 clients), Building (20-75 clients), and Scaling (75+ clients) members are all invited to complete the survey, regardless of their time in the Network. In the survey, you’ll be able to indicate how long you’ve been a part of the Network.
When are the Benchmarking Study results published? How can I access them?
  • Alan Moore and Michael Kitces debut the Benchmarking Study results from each year during the #XYPNLIVE conference, and the PDF report is made available to all members of XYPN Academy after the debut. You can view last year’s report and podcast analysis here in Academy. It includes all past reports and available podcast episodes.
How is this data collected?
  • You are now able to enter your information via the Benchmarking section of your member Portal!
Who has access to the data I submit in this survey?
  • Data provided in the survey is a part of your member record at XYPN. It is anonymized and used by the Ensemble Practice to create the annual Benchmarking Study report on trends in the Network, and by the XYPN team to provide you more tailored support as a part of your membership.
When will the next Benchmarking Study be conducted?
  • We conduct our annual benchmarking study each spring, and notify all members of the events surrounding the survey via email and during our quarterly Town Hall meetings.
