WHY DO WE CREATE A PURPOSE STATEMENT?

Think of a Purpose Statement as your North Star: something you can always refer back to as your firm grows and evolves. It’s a vital guide to keep you on track and aligned with your bigger vision. In short, it is why you do what you do. 

From here, you begin your journey with the XYPN Operating System. You will hold on to what you commit to here as you serve clients, grow a team, and impact the lives of the people in your firm's sphere on a day-to-day basis. 

WHAT TO CONSIDER AS YOU CRAFT YOUR STATEMENT

We begin with the foundation of your firm: why you are in business, what you want to do in the world, and what you want to build. How do you want to make an impact on the world, your community, and the industry? You build upon this by considering what you and your firm stand for, and then you can build from there. The Purpose Statement is all about affirming your firm’s mission and values. It’s a brief, concise statement that captures your driving purpose.

Look 10 years out. Everything you write next should reflect the firm you are building towards. This statement might shift or become clearer as time goes on, so be sure to revisit it each year during your annual strategic planning time.

LET'S GET STARTED

STEP 1

Ask yourself

1. Why are you running your firm?  Why do you serve whom you serve?
2. Example: Because my parents struggled to find a financial planner.
3. Who is your firm built to serve? Be as specific as possible.
4. Example: Teachers nearing retirement.
5. What meaningful result do you help them achieve? What changes for them because they work with you? Think of tangible outcomes.
6. Example: They will have confidence as they retire and have enough money to live comfortably. 
7. What principles guide how you do this work? How do you show up? 
8. Example: Reliability, respect, encouraging, empowering. 
9. What is your impact on your community, your network, your family, etc.? This is not limited only to client impact.
10. Example: The teachers in my community will be more financially stable, allowing them to further improve and support the community and their families. 

STEP 2

Assemble Your Draft

Using your answers from step 1, your Purpose Statement will follow this structure:

Our firm exists to help [WHO]

achieve [RESULT]

guided by [PRINCIPLES]

so that [IMPACT].

STEP 3

Make it Yours

Refine your draft into a concise, easy-to-read sentence.

Example: Our firm exists to help teachers nearing retirement in the COS area achieve financial independence and empowerment guided by a reliable, respectful financial planning relationship so that they can retire in comfort and continue to support the community and their families in the way they wish.
